How to Render Fat into Tallow: A Step-by-Step Guide
To 'render' means to melt fat down to liquid form.
Rendering fat into tallow is a laborious and intensive job.
It is well worth the effort when it is the hero ingredient in soap and cosmetic products. At Delizia Naturally we triple render ALL our Tallow. What does this mean?
It means that we melt the fat three times with water in order to purify and separate the fat from any impurities. In this way the fat is solid, clean, and pure, and ready to use in our Soap and cosmetics.
Watch a series of three videos to see how we render fat three times.
Render 1: Fat into Tallow:
Tallow has been used for centuries in soap-making and skincare, but not all tallow is created equal. The quality of the final product depends entirely on how carefully the fat is rendered. At Delizia Naturally, we triple-render all our tallow — a process that takes significantly more time and effort, but produces a fat that is exceptionally pure, clean, and stable.
So what does rendering actually involve, and why does it matter for your skin? Here's an inside look at exactly how we do it.
What Does "Rendering" Mean?
To render fat means to melt it down from its raw solid form into a liquid, separating the pure fat from connective tissue, water, and impurities. The result — tallow — is a shelf-stable, nutrient-dense fat that forms the base of our soaps, balms, and moisturisers.
Most producers render once. We render three times.
Each render involves melting the fat with water, allowing impurities to separate and sink, then straining and solidifying the fat again. By the third render, what remains is a bright white, odourless tallow with no residual impurities — the ideal base for skincare.
Render 1: Breaking Down the Raw Fat
The first render melts the raw beef fat and begins separating it from connective tissue and blood. At this stage the tallow is yellow and still contains impurities. It's a significant improvement over raw fat, but not yet ready for skincare use. This step is where most commercial producers stop.
Render 2: Fat into Tallow:
Render 2: Purifying Further
The second render with fresh water draws out more impurities that survived the first pass. You'll notice the tallow becoming lighter in colour and cleaner in smell. The water layer that separates out at the bottom carries away proteins and residual matter that would otherwise affect the stability and scent of the finished product.

Render 3: The Final Purification
By the third render, the tallow is transformed — bright white, clean, and virtually odourless. This is the tallow we use in every Delizia Naturally product. Triple-rendering is labour-intensive, but it's what allows us to create skincare that is genuinely pure, long-lasting, and suitable for even sensitive skin.
Why It Matters for Your Skin
Impurities left in poorly rendered tallow can cause products to go rancid faster, carry an unpleasant smell, or irritate sensitive skin. Triple-rendered tallow is stable, clean, and rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K — nutrients that closely mirror the lipid profile of human skin.
It's the foundation of everything we make at Delizia Naturally.

*Thank you for your interest from South Africa Estelle!
*Tim, thank you for your comment/question. I would continue to render, in truth I actually render more than three times now. Try the first time with salt and water then subsequent times just with water. Yes if you have game-i-ness, it will reduce with saponification and with a low superfat, around 4%.
More of a question, I am using sheep fat from a farm. I have rendered the first time like you have in your video and two additional renders. The tallow smells a little gamely, any tips on removing, or will it diminish during saponification?
Thank you so much for sharing your sheep tallow ideas and recipes.
Much love from
