How to Use Tallow Balm in Australia's Climate

Tallow balm is one of the most versatile natural skincare products you can own — but like any rich, fat-based product, getting the best results comes down to how and when you use it. Australia's climate varies enormously from the tropical north to the cool, dry south, so here's how to adapt your tallow balm routine to where you live and what your skin needs.

What is tallow balm?

Tallow balm is a thick, concentrated moisturiser made from rendered animal fat — typically grass-fed beef tallow or sheep tallow. Unlike water-based creams, it contains no water, no emulsifiers, and no preservatives. It's pure, stable fat that your skin absorbs readily because its fatty acid profile closely mirrors your skin's own natural oils.

How much should you use?

Less than you think. Because tallow balm contains no water or fillers, a very small amount goes a long way. Start with a pea-sized amount for your face, or a small fingertip scoop for hands and body. Warm it between your fingers first — body heat melts it instantly — then press and smooth it into your skin.

If it feels greasy, you've used too much. Reduce the amount next time and apply to slightly damp skin for better absorption.

Using tallow balm in different Australian climates

Hot and humid (Queensland, Northern Territory, northern WA)

In tropical and subtropical climates, tallow balm is best used sparingly and at night. The heat means your skin is already producing more sebum, so a light application before bed — especially on dry patches, elbows, or feet — is usually enough. Avoid applying heavily before going out in the sun.

Hot and dry (inland areas, South Australian summers)

Dry heat is where tallow balm really shines. Without humidity to help retain moisture, skin can become tight and flaky quickly. A slightly more generous application morning and night works well here. Focus on areas that dry out fastest — hands, lips, shins, and around the nose.

Temperate (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth)

In temperate climates, tallow balm works well year-round with seasonal adjustments. In summer, use it lightly as a night treatment or spot moisturiser. In winter, layer it over slightly damp skin after a shower for deep, lasting hydration that holds up against cold, dry air.

Cool and dry (alpine areas, Tasmanian winters)

This is where tallow balm is at its most powerful. Cold, dry air strips moisture fast, and water-based creams often evaporate before they can do much. Tallow's occlusive properties lock in moisture effectively, making it ideal as a daily moisturiser, hand balm, and lip treatment in colder months.

Best uses for tallow balm

  • Face moisturiser — apply a tiny amount to clean, slightly damp skin morning or night
  • Hand balm — especially after washing hands frequently or working outdoors
  • Lip balm — a small dab lasts for hours
  • Dry patch treatment — elbows, heels, knuckles, around the nose
  • After-sun care — apply to sun-exposed skin in the evening to support recovery
  • Baby skin — our fragrance-free tallow balms are gentle enough for newborns
