How to Make a Danish Soap Wash

Creating your own traditional Danish Soap Finish is surprisingly simple.

You'll Need

• 100g Delizia Naturally Tallow Soap Flakes
• 1 litre of very hot water
• A clean bucket or heatproof container
• A soft cloth, sponge or white applicator pad

Step 1 – Dissolve the Soap

Add the soap flakes to the hot water and stir until completely dissolved.

Allow the solution to cool until it becomes slightly creamy.

Step 2 – Prepare the Timber

For best results the timber should be:

• Raw and unfinished
• Clean
• Dry
• Smoothly sanded (120–180 grit)

Remove all sanding dust before applying the soap.

Step 3 – Apply the Soap Wash

Apply the solution generously using a cloth or sponge, always following the direction of the grain.

Allow the timber to absorb the solution for several minutes before wiping away any excess.

Step 4 – Let It Dry

Allow the timber to dry completely—preferably overnight.

Step 5 – Repeat

Traditional Danish Soap Finishes are built gradually.

How Much Does It Cover?

One 100g bag of Delizia Naturally Tallow Soap Flakes, mixed with 1 litre of hot water, produces approximately 1 litre of Danish Soap Wash.

For the initial treatment, where 3–6 coats are recommended, one litre will typically cover approximately 8–12 square metres of raw timber flooring, depending on the timber species and its porosity.

Once the protective finish has been established, maintenance uses a much weaker soap solution. The same 100g bag can then clean and maintain well over 100 square metres of timber flooring across multiple washes, making it an economical and environmentally friendly choice for long-term timber care.
